History:
Charles Zorach was born to a Kentucky family of coal miners although in the modern era, traveling off world to work as dilithium miners. His father, James Zorach, worked in dilithium mines all his life and retired in 2357. His father was absent for much of his young life. His mother, Wilma Zorach, was a hospital nurse and finally retired in 2375. Charles had a normal childhood although he only saw his dad occasionally. His dad ruled with a heavy hand even from the long distance of his dilithium mining camp. His dad always expected Charles to follow his footsteps and work in the dilithium mines like his grandfather and great-grandfather, both who perished in the mines. Charles had other ideas and this would lead to much tension in the family home. Without the presence of his father, he came to trust his own authority rather than some model father.
Charles was thrilled to be moving fast in cars, planes, and in his dreams within spaceships. He pushed his body to its limits physically and emotionally. He dated a dozen different girls in high school but wasn’t settled with anyone of them. Charles was confident and demanding in his romantic affairs but was always honest with them.
Charles played football at Bowling Green High School. He graduated in 2357 and immediately enrolled in the Starfleet Marines to escape from his father’s encouragement to get a job in the dilithium mines. SF Marines was a relief compared to living at home. The discipline and controlled environment fit into Charles’ life like a glove. He thrived in the Marine experience and took to the flight training program. He completed the Marine Corp training program in 2361 with a qualification as troop shuttle pilot. He had two romantic interests during his Academy days but at graduation, he was not committed to anyone but work.
Charles was most comfortable in a fighter pilot seat. He enrolled in the SF Marines Advanced Pilot School for three years. He dedicated himself to knowing everything about fighters and during his studies assisted in the design and testing of fighters at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards near Mars. Charles became qualified in the Razor fighter.
Charles was posted to Starbase 24 near the Klingon border with the Cool Kats Fighter Squadron. The squadron defended the Starbase from pirates and occasional Klingon aggression. He was responsible for 36 defensive strikes against enemy ships (bandits). He became qualified in the use of the Broadsword Marine fighter.
After the Borg attack at Wolf 359, fighter pilots were critically needed to defend starbases around the Federation. Charles was reassigned to Starbase 60 into the Black Devil Squadron, a part of the 316th Marine Expeditionary Regiment. He spent six years in various battles with marauding pirates including the Crimson Dragons and the Orion syndicate around the Calder system. He also was involved in several unofficial skirmishes with the Romulans. He became qualified with the new Peregrine fighter. During this tour, he acquired his first tattoo.
In 2373 with the increasing threat of Dominion forces in the Alpha quadrant, Charles was deployed to Starbase 514 with the Delta Angel Squadron. He became qualified in the Valkyrie fighter as it was rushed into production for the Dominion War. This squadron engaged both Breen vessels and later Dominion fighters during the Dominion War. During this tour, he acquired his second tattoo. Many of his fighter colleagues were killed. In 2375, Charles was badly injured defending the Starbase from a Dominion fighter squadron. His inner ear damage was too extensive for medical repairs and he was grounded from pilot duties. It was a most disturbing adjustment for Charles. He retired from the Marines and looked toward a fresh start as a Fleetie.
Starfleet Headquarters moved Charles back to Earth for Intelligence Training for three years given his previous experiences dealing with enemy fighters. Charles longed to be back in space. He got involved with a female superior officer who broke his heart. He vowed never to get romantically involved with superior officers again. Drinking became a hobby for Charles much to the disdain of his friendly physician.
Charles was posted to the USS Wilson in 2378. During his tour as Intelligence Officer, he was known to follow orders and obey Starfleet regulations. During a first contact encounter with a beginning warp-developing race, Nytee, Charles acquired some evidence that the race was hiding Dominion resources on their moon. In an assault on their moon, valuable artifacts were destroyed. The short battle with the Nytee would setback Federation trading negotiations for years. Charles received a reprimand and was reassigned.
Charles was posted to the Starfleet Diplomatic Office on Vulcan in 2380. His duties were light so he could concentrate on learning logical collection techniques. He became friends with a Vulcan diplomat named Kokar. His association with Kokar and his training eventually allowed Starfleet Intelligence to consider him ready for another assignment.
