Beyond the Myth With Russell D. Floyd

To celebrate the fact that this crew has been together for a year (first on the USS Pegasus and now on Starbase 47) I thought we could take the opportunity to get to know the people behind the characters a bit and see what makes them tick! I hope you enjoyed these interviews as much as I have!

Some Factual Data:

Name: Harm-Jan Kah
Age (and/or date of birth): June 6th, 1977, so that would make it 29.

[CO] Ok,is there anything else you think I should've asked you in this section?

[HJ] I think there's lot's of identifying material right there.

[CO] If you say so on to the real hard questions then, How long have you been doing Star Trek PBeM RPGs and Where did you start?

[HJ] I started about a year ago with a character aboard the USS Pegasus. A few difficult choices had to be made: what function aboard the ship and I need a name... So far my one and only character is Russell D. Floyd, Chief Medical Officer. Had a lot of fun so far.

[CO] So you're Chief Medical Officer, what made you decide to take this position after thinking it over so long and carefully?

[HJ] I figured that as a CMO you're involved in any possible storyline you might have aboard a ship. And just the fact I like many of the medical characters in the StarTrek series (The Doctor (EMH) or Phlox), I thought it would be a great position to write about. A lot of story material. And I like to play a bit excentric character, a doctor fits perfectly, I think.

[CO] And so do I! You portray Russell very well, you even won a Humour award with his posts... what did you think when you first heard this?

[HJ] I was very pleased of course. Always nice to have your work appreciated. If I may say so myself, some of the JP's were hilarious to write and funny to read afterwards, especially those with Ronald Evans as a bunkmate.

[CO] Luckily we're on a starbase now and you share your room with your family rather then the Chief Ops... or will you miss him after all?

[HJ] I'm sure we will run into each other again to have some nutty adventure aboard the Starbase or anywhere else. But in a way I guess I'll miss the "good ol' days" of having a snoring roommate. ven more story potential...

[CO] Talking about the good ol' days, what do you like best about Simming? And what about the Pegasus/Starbase Ronin in particular?

[HJ] When I started it I wondered what to write about. Writing the stories, reading the other posts that together make it life aboard a vessel, or lately aboard a starbase. What I like in particular is that it's a rather close group of characters. A lot have been serving aboard since the beginning of Pegasus a year ago. And almost everybody stayed aboard after switching to the starbase. I think that shows we're all having a great time on board.

[CO] That's good to hear, for a CO as well as the other crew I think. So is there any particular moment from your character that stayed with you through time? something really memorable? and what about the other characters?

[HJ] A memorable moment... I still think the Floyd-meeting-Evans-post is a classic. (Sorry, bragging a bit here...) And about other characters... There are lots of memorable moments in the missions we played. I couldn't make a list of them fearing to leave some out. I have no other storywriting experience to compare it with, but in my opinion we write great quality stories aboard our ship/starbase.

[CO] Not bragging at all, I asked for it . It does make you wonder where they all get their inspiration from, for you personally, where do you get your inspiration from?

[HJ] For a part from the actual StarTrek series, just for the way of storywriting. But most of the inspiration just comes from somewhere, I guess. Depends on the storyline. For instance, the latest Q-mission gave me the insane idea of to have him dressed up like Tarzan. Have you seen the character photo? (Of course you have... )

[CO] I have... for those who didn't... what does your character look like and why did you pick that picture?

[HJ] It started with a name. I just made up a name for the character that was to be the CMO, Russell D. Floyd. Still have to figure out what the D. stands for, though. After that I searched Google images for Floyd. After browsing through a few pages I found his picture. A man around 50, I guess. Grey hair, ringbeard and ancient glasses. Friendly, funny look on his face. It fitted perfectly. I wrote the bio accordingly. (Maybe lied a bit about his real age though, I don't know)

[CO] I don't know either, and now for a very unclean leap to a new question, if you would have to pick a quote to describe your character what quote would that be? and why that quote?

[HJ] "I'm a doctor, not an old guy!"

[CO] and why?

[HJ] Because that may be the first idea you get when you look at the character's picture. At least you had that idea. He denies it in character as well.

[CO] But can't he be both?

[HJ] Could be, but doesn't want to be...

[CO] fair enough, I'll stop about it Old man... Now to wrap things up before I get my leg amputated next time I bump my toe, is there anything you think everybody who will read this Should know?!

[HJ] Can't think of anything really. I hope the stories will continue for a long time, if we survive the Q mission, that is...

[CO] Remains for me to say, thanks for your time and I'm sure I'll see you around on the base.

[HJ] Definitely, but I'll have to get out of the West African jungle first...
