River of Forgetfulness #23 - 24 "Perhaps a Predictable Conclusion"

ON: <<USS Edinburgh, XO's Quarters>>

Jesse Walker lay back on his bed and sighed. He felt dead, like he could sleep for a week. He wondered if everyone felt like that after dealing with a very exasperating Q. It certainly wasn't a happy occasion to be dealing with an overbearing and arrogant guy who thought he could move mountains. Especially when he actually could.

His door opened, and Hannah slipped in. "You should probably lock your door, Mr. XO - who know's who could slip in unannounced?"

"Yeah because I really want to keep out gorgeous red headed lieutenants..." Jesse joked and smiled as he moved up off of the bed and slipped his arms around her waist.

"You might want to in future, though." Hannah said, kissing him. "I got something to tell you. You might want to sit down."

"Oh? Why do I have the feeling that this isn't going to end up with you and I going for a roll in the hay?" Jesse asked, trying to make light of the situation while his heart was bouncing up and down between his throat and stomach.

Hannah stepped back, and sighed. "You remember when Q took us...how we felt...the stuff we did...the...rolls in the hay." Hannah smiled weakly.

"I sometimes wish I didn't remember... but yes, I do." Jesse said, his heart settling in the pit of his stomach while his gut turned into knots when Hannah moved out of his embrace.

"Well, those rolls in the hay had a certain unforseen...and biologically inexplicable consequence." She took a deep breath. "I'm pregnant, Jesse."

"Schwa.!? Wha!?" He asked, his jaw dropping as he faltered on his feet and stepped back a bit, suddenly growing very very warm, very very dizzy, and very very relieved all in the same half a second span as blood rushed to his brain.

"Yeah." Hannah said, simply. "That was pretty much my response. Doctor caught it during my check-up after the mission. Said otherwise I wouldn't have known for a couple of weeks. The craziest thing is that he said it was within the last two days...while we were AWOL in other people's bodies."

"Well... I uh... suppose there's uhm.... only really one thing to do then..." Jesse said slowly and nodded.

"I'm keeping the baby!" Hannah said impulsively, cutting him off. Up until that moment, she had no idea what she wanted, but suddenly, with the threat to the baby, she realised.

"I uh... didn't uhm... think you wouldn't." Said Jesse confusedly as he turned and walked on quite wobbly legs towards his nightstand.

"Oh." Hannah said. "Um...what were you going to say, then?"

Jesse pulled out the drawer on the nightstand and took something from it before walking back to her.

"I was going to say that I guess the only thing to do..." Jesse started, kneeling before her and opening the small box which held a ring inside.

"Is to ask you to marry me." He finished.

Hannah's jaw dropped. "Oh Jesse..." was all she could say for a moment.

"Yes, of course!" She said, grabbing the ring as if it was going to disappear, and put it on. "It's beautiful...so you were planning this all along?" She said, looking coyly at him.

"Well uh not really. I bought the ring with the intention of asking you, but I didn't know exactly when I'd ask... this kinda made the decision for me." Jesse said with a smile.

"Now that's something you really shouldn't have told me." Hannah smiled. "I won't hold it against you, though." She laughed. "Oh Jesse...you have no idea how happy you've made me." She sat down on the bed.

He smiled and wrapped his arms around her waist.

"I'm glad I've made you happy then... Mrs. Walker." He said with a grin.

"Oh gosh, I hadn't even thought about that - Hannah Walker." She tried the name on for size, and found that she quite liked it.

Jesse smirked and kissed her lips gently and then a bit more deeply.

"Well now." Hannah said, smiling happily. "Seems to me that this kind of behaviour is what got us here in the first place." She pressed in close to him, guiding his hands to the fastenings of her uniform. "I think it's to be heartily encouraged..."

"Well... Mrs. Walker... Then encourage away." Jesse grinned as they fell back onto his bed.
