Beyond the Myth With Caelen LaBrie

To celebrate the fact that this crew has been together for a year (first on the USS Pegasus and now on Starbase 47) I thought we could take the opportunity to get to know the people behind the characters a bit and see what makes them tick! I hope you enjoyed these interviews as much as I have!

I think that covers the basics, since I was actually doing all these interviews myself I figured I could just do a monologue to go beyond the myth of Caelen LaBrie. Of course there is the chance I will bore you to death but that’s a risk I’m willing to take.

In case you are actually wondering, I’ve been playing in Star Trek PBeM RPGs since the end of the year 2000 (November or December), that makes it 6 years now. I started in Bravo fleet, on a Galaxy class vessel the USS Gemini. Unfortunately, about a year after I joined, it slowed down to a crawl before officially disbanding. I took the position of Chief Security Officer as a Freed-Borg drone named, very originally, John Conahan. The only reason I took that spot because at the time it was the only available posting.

So I started when I was 13, because I liked Star Trek so much, at the time it was still on TV daily (DS9 as well as Voyager). After I joined the Gemini I felt part of the crew, of the group, this is really important to me. This is also the reason why I only stick with certain sims for three months, if I get past that barrier it usually means that I feel in place and will stick around for a long time. I like it that I see this back in the Pegasus and Ronin as well, it’s not only me that notices this Family feel it’s most players. I think it’s because we started with a core group of players, around 7 or 8, that knew each other (Either from real life or other sims/RP experience).

Coming to the most memorable moment for my character, I think that would be the first post with the XO. Caelen was so proud that he finally got a ship that he couldn’t see that the USS Pegasus was actually rather small and would be a bit useless in combat even. He was so proud and excited, Kristiana helped pop his bubble with sarcastic remarks and a cynical view on the vessel. It’s very hard to choose a favourite moment for any of the other characters though, there have been pearls of posts out there and I hope to read many more. From Kennock’s Coffee prayer to Kitty ‘driving’ Evans’ smart, really to much to mention really. I really like how the crew picks up the ideas of missions and completely walk away with it, making it something totally different from what I first thought it would become.

My inspiration comes mostly from within myself, if you just give me an empty moment of thought to think about some story I will be able to think of something. For the mission I took inspiration from Greek Mythology (which I LOVE by the way) and for the posts of Caelen where he plays on his Guitar I use Iron Maiden and Dream Theater songs. I hope I am able to reflect the feelings, emotions and settings as well as I feel them, although my biggest weakness is probably trying to describe everything that happens, because I want to give a consistent image of the surroundings and actions.

I didn’t need to think a long time to find a quote that would fit Caelen, it’s from one of my favourite movies, Con Air. I know there is a weak story and plot to it I love one-liners and action, mix that with Nicolas Cage and John Malkovic and I think you have the perfect movie. Anyway the quote I picked is: “There’s only Two men I trust, one’s me… the other is not you” I think it just reflects Caelen’s state of mind really well, the only other man he ever trusted was his best friend Alexander, and he died on an away mission.

As a Final note I would like to wish the players in OF and on my base in particular a Lot of Fun and Good Luck on all the missions and endeavours! And keep in mind that it’s just a game, remember to have fun!
