Beyond the Myth With Kathleen Black!

To celebrate the fact that this crew has been together for a year (first on the USS Pegasus and now on Starbase 47) I thought we could take the opportunity to get to know the people behind the characters a bit and see what makes them tick! I hope you enjoyed these interviews as much as I have!

Some Data:

Name: Joy
Age (DOB): 2/5/1977 and I'm 29 years old, currently. ^.^ The latter may change. The former will not.
Country: United States

[CO] very well that, that rounds of the facts, unless there is something else everybody Should know?

[Joy] I'm married. ^.^ And I have a son.

[CO] ah ok, well with that settled, moving on to the real questions How long have you been doing Star Trek PBeM RPGs and Where did you start?

[Joy] I started almost a year ago with Kathleen Black on the USS Pegasus. That's just the Star Trek stuff, of course.

[CO] Yeah, I understand you've been RP'ing a lot longer. Takes us back to the beginning, where did it all start?

[Joy] Which all, the Star Trek, or all of it?

[CO] all of it

[Joy] I started roleplaying freeform on CBix, on an Amiga with a modem running 1200 baud, under my father's tutelage. He helped me form my first character, Elannora, and taught me all the helpful little techniques to avoid powergaming and such.

[CO] What kind of character was Elannora?

[Joy] She was a quarter-elven adventurer and archer, a bit of a lone wolf looking to avenge the deaths of her family by hunting orcs. She had a lot of courage and no sense whatsoever. She'd charge in and just hope everything would be okay. A lot of other characters got to help her out of a lot of messes. She was always in over her head and dragging as many as she could in with her.

[CO] Is there anything of this character that we see back in our own Kathleen Black?

[Joy] Oh, that's not an easy one. Kitty is more like me than Elannora was. She still manages to get into messes and drag half the crew in with her. I'd have to say she frequently gets in over her head. Maybe they're more similar than I thought they were... That's a frightening thought, really.

[CO] Talking about examples of memorable events, what was the most memorable moment for your character on either the Pegasus or Ronin? And what about the other characters?

[Joy] Hmm. For Kitty, I'd have to say it was the story that coalesced from a conversation that Evans' player and I had about how funny it would be if the alternate universe Evans aggressively hit on Kitty and she pounded him for it. For the others? Capsizing was good, that was certainly excellent. I've enjoyed Sulan's story for ages and it was a treat to be able to add to it. I've had some wonderful moments with Petrova, especially when Kitty was looking for relationship advice. Of course, I had a lot of fun watching Caelen try to set up Kitty and Evans on a date... And we can't forget Ryylar and his chocolate coffee, or Hannah and their ice cream... If I tried to name them all, I'd run out of room REAL fast!

[CO] Fair enough, we'll move on there. Knowing you're writing a lot of stories in a lot of different places, it gets me wondering, where do you get all the inspiration from?

[Joy] I like to claim I'm a storyteller. No matter where I am or what I'm doing, there are always stories happening inside my head. A lot of the material is stuff I can adapt for my roleplay. Some things cross characters and genres, and I recycle ideas sometimes. Sometimes I get ideas from movies I see, books I read, or just things I see in everyday life. For instance, the "Pfizer Regretta" featured in the sailing race is a genuine entity, described faithfully to me by my father. He asked me to include it somewhere.

[Joy] I usually get it the most when I'm trying to sleep or concentrate at a meeting. Any story idea I have gets stuck in my head until I write it out, and if I don't keep writing, I'll get what I call a 'brain logjam'.

[CO] We're all weird in one way or another, Joy, no worries there to quickly move away from this topic, and for lack of better bridge, if you were to pick a quote to describe your character, what quote would it be and why that quote?

[Joy] Oof, that's a tough one. Can we come back to that?

[CO] well it's actually the last question of the interview so... you can take your time

[Joy] Oof, gee. [thinks it over] Probably "I've got an idea. Duck."

[CO] and why this quote?

[Joy] Probably because she thinks so quickly that she sometimes appears to act before she thinks. Also because she's dangerously innovative at times. Just look at the state the Pegasus was in when they docked for the last time. She did an awful lot of that herself! One of her biggest and most important traits is her belief that if she can conceive of it, it can probably be done.

[CO] And on that bombshell I would like to call it a night is there anything that you think the readers on this interview Should, absolutely, know?

[Joy] So far this has probably been the most cohesive, entertaining, and easy-going group I've ever had the privilege of roleplaying with, with the exception of family Paranoia games (my father makes a stellar GM/Computer), and I do feel as if it's a privilege for me to be such a part of it. I have an excellent time here.

[CO] Thank you for your time and I hope you'll be with us for a long time to come

[Joy] I hope so too! you have a lovely night.
