Reflections #80 - "Honey, I'm home!"

-={On}=-

[Floyd Residence, San Diego, Earth]

It had been a long journey back to Earth for Russell. He had spent nearly a week to get to know the Starbase which would be his next home, albeit involuntary. Right after he accepted the offer to become CMO on Starbase 47 from his captain he wanted to go home to tell his family the great news. But he had to wait a week before there was an available transport for the trip home since all the seats had been taken. Reluctant he accepted his fate and made the best of the time he had available at the station before his shuttle home would depart. The days crawled by, but finally he stood in front of his house in San Diego.

After the Pegasus came back from the mirror universe he had been in contact with his family several times. They had been worried sick since when the news came in that the Pegasus went missing. That was exactly the sort of news his wife Laura was afraid of when Russell came with the announcement that he applied for a CMO position on a starship a year ago. "What if your ship has an accident and you don't come back? What are we going to do?" Laura had asked him then. The memory of their lengthy conversation ran through his mind when he entered the house.

"Honey, I'm home!" he yelled the biggest cliché possible when he stood in the hallway and walked into the kitchen, suspecting his wife might be there. Nine out of ten times she was to be found there when he got home from work before. She wasn't this time. <That's odd.> he thought to himself. <I told her when I would arrive.>

Laura was in the living room when she heard someone come in. She got up to see who it was and almost started running when she heard Russell's voice. "Russell!" she yelled and flew around his neck even before he had a chance to turn around. "I'm so glad you're home safe!" she said and kissed him fiercely. "We thought you'd never come back." She then let go of her `death grip'.

Russell turned around and hugged and kissed her. "I told you everything would be all right?" he said to her with a big smile on his face. "Where are the kids?"

"They'll be home soon. School isn't out yet." Laura answered, releasing the hug. "So what did you write about your ship? They're scrapping it instead of repairing it for the next mission?"

"Yeah, something like that. I think Starfleet had the idea the ship was beyond repair. Can't blame them, though. It's amazing we made it to the Starbase." Russell said with a thoughtful look on his face. "It's one hell of an engineer we got on board, keeping the ship together under those circumstances."

"And what is the big surprise you mentioned? You're coming home to work here again?" Laura asked hopeful. She never liked the idea of Russell being in another part of the galaxy and herself stuck on Earth.

"Not exactly…" Russell said on a mysterious tone. He teased her a bit. She hated surprises.

"Come on, out with it!" she commanded him. "You know I hate it when you do that." She added with a faint smile.

"All right, all right. I got a new assignment as Chief Medical Officer." He said, still not revealing the whole truth.

Laura just said "Oh…" It wasn't the answer she hoped for. "You'll be leaving again then soon." She said a bit disappointed. She turned around and walked back to the living room.

Russell immediately followed her and said "Wait! I haven't told you everything yet. It isn't on a starship, it's on a Starbase. Captain LaBrie got command of Starbase 47 and asked me to become Chief Medical Officer. He's trying to keep the crew of the Pegasus together. You can come along if you like. The kids too."

Laura turned around and looked him straight in the eyes. "What would we do on a Starbase? We can't just leave everything here behind? Family, friends, the practice…" she said.

"You don't have to decide just yet." Russell said with a smile. "I still have a month of shore leave so we can work something out. I'm sure the kids will be thrilled. Especially Peter. And there is a Starfleet medical facility on the planet's surface. You can work there as a physician if you don't want to be in the same sickbay as me." He said smiling. "Although the climate on Lethe IV is not as pleasant as Earth's. I haven't been there yet, but it seems to be a bit windy over there."

"Well, I don't know, Russell." Laura said truthfully. "It's a big step to go to the other side of Federation space."

"On the edge of Federation space, even." Russell said. "And a third of the year we'll be in the Romulan Neutral Zone." He added.

"The Neutral Zone?" Laura asked shocked. "You want us all to go to the Neutral Zone? Are you out of your mind? That's no place for kids!"

"Don't worry, dear." Russell said. "Just think about it, okay? It's a Starbase. Whatever can happen to a Starbase?"
