Family:

Gavin is the eldest brother and with that assumed the responsibility of elder siblinghood. He can’t stand his four younger brothers, but would put his life on the line for them at any time. His brothers looked up to him out of respect and out of admiration, like a role model. Both of Gavin’s parents are living – his father is a coach and his mother is a high school teacher.

Personality:

Gavin is quiet in most large social setting, preferring others to come to him as needed rather than going to them. However, he does keep the welfare overall ship in mind constantly.

While not afraid to beat the living day lights out of someone out of protection of himself or an innocent life (he’s not a die hard pacifist), he could never bring himself to kill. This may be why he is a vegetarian.

While he is a spiritual person he does not exude the ostentatiousness of someone representing a higher power. He doesn’t cause bodily harm like Klingon spiritualists, dress in regalia like Bajoran prelates or ooze somberness like Vulcan monks. He’s a normal guy who looks at life through a spiritual lens.

Gavin is not in a committed relationship. He also would not enter into a committed relationship without carefully weighing the options – God called him; he is not free to follow his own heart. He typically dates outgoing people who have similar laid back psyches.

Gavin possesses the psychic ability of the Bandi people. He has the ability to communicate telepathically with other species. Bandi have more difficulty sensing emotions, but can read words and thoughts in minds.

Gavin has always been physical, giving him a chiseled appearance. He is a t-shirt and jeans kind of guy when not on duty. This is an absolute dichotomy from his station in life – as a spiritual guide. One would expect a thin, frail elderly gentleman who oozes calm and spirituality. He wears a simple silver ring on the middle finger of his right hand. Inscribed on the ring is a simple cross and in cursive writing are the words “Semper Fidelis,” which translates to “Always Faithful.”

He holds himself well, seeming sure of himself in any situation though not overly cocky. Gavin understands the chain of command on a starship and would rather express dissatisfaction in private rather than in a full meeting. Being a civilian gives him special insight into the operations of a Starfleet vessel.

On an aside, Gavin has an odd habit of half smiling and rarely laughing. When someone causes a full smile he considers them very respected or impressive. He has learned to guard his emotions well when others are confessing their inner most beliefs.

History:

Gavin was a quiet child. He was not overly withdrawn per se, in fact, he participated in sports and other activities. He was just not the center of attention. He would be found by his parents sitting in his closet reading a book and moments later climbing a tree trying to defeat the dreaded Mongolians attacking the shores of Alaska.

As his four younger brothers were born he became a protective older sibling, though finding the slightest noise or breath out of any of them annoying. As his brothers fought for parental attention Gavin became more withdrawn and found solace in aloneness.

In high school Gavin played all the popular sports, he enjoyed working his muscles as well as his mind. He communed with God when his body was stretched to its limits. It was in high school that a transformation occurred.

Gavin became more entwined in his spirituality and made a final decision to attend the Ecclesiastical University at the Vatican.

His time at the epicenter of some of the most powerful religious and spiritual movements on Earth changed him forever. He didn’t become a religious zealot, but rather felt a fire within him to live life on your own terms in commune with God.

Shortly after his education he returned to Alaska. He worked as a Chaplain for the civilian corps of the Federation and met people from around the Universe. He was able to study the spirituality and religion of countless races. He learned Vulcan and Bajoran while studying with a Vedek and a Vulcan Monk.

Gavin presided over his first marriage ceremony during his position with the Federation. It was between a friend of his from Earth and a Trill woman. The Trill, like most species practice a secular humanistic religion. At the ceremony Gavin met Saijen Piers. Saijen was a joined Trill who was quite influential in diplomatic circles. The two developed an attachment, though not physical, it was almost spiritual.

Tragically Saijen was murdered by a Jaradan terrorist. Gavin still wears the silver ring Saijen gave to him. It was a simple silver ring with a standard cross and the Latin inscription “Semper Fidelis,” which translates as “Always Faithful.” The silver came from the Holy Land and it was engraved by a friend of the two.
