  • Interests and Hobbies: Emmeline is an avid gardener, and always keeps at least one plant in her quarters. She monitors events on her homeworld closely, and often writes opinion pieces on current affairs. Few have ever been published, but this doesn't seem to have dissuaded her in the slightest.

Personality:

To the observer, Emmeline often appears rather nondescript. She seems very diligent, rather unobtrusive and tends to be overlooked. This misconception can often lead to surprise when Emmeline objects to something - she has absolutist tendencies and, once she has decided to take a stand on a matter, can be impossibly stubborn. When her beliefs are questioned, Emmeline is extremely self-assured.

This is a rare occurrence, however, and for the most part Emmeline keeps to herself. She still hides certain insecurities about her background and worries they will be brought to light. Confident in her abilities as an engineer, she prefers to be given her tasks and left alone to complete them. Oversupervision irritates her immensely. She has quite a dry sense of humor and has been known to leave others wondering whether a statement of hers was a joke or an insult.

Although she would never admit to it, Emmeline misses her parents and sister and still suffers periods of homesickness. If this is noticed, she is apt to blame her mood on 'womanly problems,' knowing no more questions will be asked.

History:

Second child of Daniel Kane and Catarina Callaghan, Emmeline was born on the planet Siduri II. The Siduri'in colony, though officially governed by Earth, was so small and distant that it was largely left to its own devices, and so Emmeline grew up with a far stronger affiliation to her little community than to Earth or the Federation as a whole. Her parents had emigrated to the colony in their youth, mostly driven by Catarina's fascination with the vegetation indigenous to Siduri, and it had seemed to them upon arrival a vast improvement to their previous life on Earth.

As a child, Emmeline attended the local school for children of the colonists, and although she was a rather quiet girl, her potential in the scientific fields was soon apparent. However, even at an early age she was very practical in nature, and took a great interest in her father's engineering work. As soon as she was old enough to assist him, she discovered that this was in fact her passion, and knew she wanted to follow in his footsteps.

When Emmeline was twelve, her sister Branwen left to study anthropology on Earth. The two sisters had been close, and it is likely that if Branwen had not left the colony, Emmeline would also have remained, particularly as their parents were not particularly pleased with Branwen's choice at the time. In any case, her sister's departure came as a great shock to Emmeline, and it was only after this that she grew more outspoken, no longer having Branwen to speak for her.

Five years later, Emmeline applied for Starfleet Academy. She was by then determined not only to become an engineer, but to truly achieve her potential, and from the research she had done it seemed Starfleet was by far the best place for this. Exploration came secondary to the thought that she would have access to the best teachers and resources in engineering anywhere on Earth. Work on Siduri was interesting enough, but it was mainly routine maintenance and Emmeline wanted something that was a little more of a challenge.

So she was accepted, and even as her parents had left Earth many years before, she returned. All her preparations, however, could not shield Emmeline from the culture shock. Afraid of being viewed as uneducated, she tried to lose her Siduri accent, and quickly dropped her slightly altered dialect in favor of true Federation Standard. In reality, her fears were merely psychological - Emmeline was treated no differently at Starfleet Academy for her background, and indeed there were students from much further afield.

Much to Emmeline's confusion, many people at the Academy assumed she was part Vulcan. Not due to any predisposition towards logic, however - it was her hair. The short, practical style that had been rather popular on Siduri seemed to have rather different connotations on Earth. When she discovered this Emmeline, finding it rather amusing, was even more determined to keep the style.

Her years at the Academy were somewhat uneventful, she was not an exceptional student but a consistent and hardworking one, and graduated in the top 20% of her class. Upon discovering her first assignment Emmeline made the effort to learn basic Romulan, despite the fact that languages did not come easily to her. She is a little nervous about life aboard the starbase, but dismisses these worries with the thought that she can perhaps remain relatively unnoticed in the engineering department.
