Beyond the Myth With Ronald Evans!

To celebrate the fact that this crew has been together for a year (first on the USS Pegasus and now on Starbase 47) I thought we could take the opportunity to get to know the people behind the characters a bit and see what makes them tick! I hope you enjoyed these interviews as much as I have!

Some Data:

Name: Mathijs Wijers
Age (DOB): I'm a '77 model...
Country: That would be the Netherlands

[CO] anyth ing else you think I should've asked in this section?

[Mathijs] Eh... Gender? This one's male...

[CO] Ok! with that cleared up we move on to the Real questions ! How long have you been doing Star Trek PBeM RPGs and Where did you start?

[Mathijs] I've known about these PBeM RPGs for several years now, but I never thought I would have had the time for them. It was only a year or so ago, that Caelen LaBrie asked me to join him on the Pegasus, either as the Captain's <PEEP>... Eh... Yeoman or as operations officer. I reluctantly accepted, and I never regretted it ever since... I have joined him in another PBeM too, one set in the X-Men world, but I just haven't had the time to play both, so I concentrated on Ronald Evans... It gained me a very sweet penpall to boot... She joined the ship as an engineer. It clicked like a lightswitch.

[CO] Ah yes, Evans and Black, an interesting relation indeed tell me why did you pick Chief Operations officer?

[Mathijs] Well, I'm an electronics engineer in RL, so I thought I could use my real-life knowledge, to bring some realism into that technobabble... I figured, that since electronics and hydrolics have a lot of commons, electronics and plasma-theory could have parallels too... I was going for the position as an engineer, but that one was already taken... The ops officer was the next best option... Leave it to Black and Evans to completely save the day, destroying half the ship! With the captain's permission, of course...

[CO] Or in his absence that of Kristiana... I know that your first meeting with our very special russian XO was... less then smooth... right?

[Mathijs] Yup! Evans screwed up bigtime, then. Even though I and Kris' player get along rather well, Kris and Evans just are not going to work... But that's as designed. Actually, Kris really doesn't have a problem with Evans, it's just that Evans' sheer terror of the woman prevents him from seeing that... I really like that situation. It just gives you lots to write about...

[CO] Yeah it seems that Evans is more a man of extremes... which gives the other readers extreme fun as well, when you blow up a console or something similar in an attempt to fix it. I can imagine that you enjoy writing Evans a lot, I am wondering though what do you like best about simming in general and Pegasus/Starbase Ronin in particular?

[Mathijs] Well... It's working with the GM... The GM comes up with a situation, and I usually can think of a way around that. The GM then needs to think of something else, to protect his plot... That's just one aspect. I also like to make Evans flirt with Kitty, of course... However, now I think about it, I may want to cut down on Evans' genius... He is quite fast with his solutions. Too fast, sometimes... It's probably my fault... I like to solve problems. The more unconventional and 'chewinggum and ducttape', the better.

[CO] You had enough oppertunity for those "chewinggum and ducttape" moments and I think that, since you are the specialist in the field, it's expected of you to come up with solutions. I know the next question will be hard but I'd like an answer regardless , What was the most memorable situation of your character? and what about the other characters, is there a moment you remember vividly of other characters on the Pegasus/Ronin?

[Mathijs] Well... Ehm... I was thinking about the first time he met our XO... But then again, now I start to think about it, the most fun I had with him, was with the blabbermouth-disease... It was a classic! Being stuck in an elevator with a beautiful woman, you just accidentally saw naked, and not being able to keep your thoughts to yourself. I hade a helluva laugh that time!

Oh... One of the players that gave up... Kennock was praying his morning prayer at the coffeemachine. That was golden, and I just had to make a parody... I made Evans 'pray' the same 'prayer', with only one difference... Adding sugar...

[CO] Yeah it was sad to see the first of a bunch Diplomatic Officers going, as if the position was cursed or something. So in this case you got the idea from Kennock but in all your other posts, which are quite a lot and quite long (especially the ones with Kitty), where do you get your inspiration for those novels?

[Mathijs] Oh, I dunno... Kitty helps a lot... We sometimes start at 10 PM, just to write a quickie, and then I push the sendbutton at 1:30 in the morning, having to get up for work in 5 and a half hours... It just flows out of my wrists onto the keyboard. ten-finger typing helps, by the way...

[CO] But the real inspiration? The things your character is based on? Do other things like music, tv or films give you inspiration for your posts in general?

[Mathijs] Hm... It might be connected, or it might not, but I read a lot of fanfics. There is a lot of worthless junk between them, but there are a number of authors, that are just plain genious... I'm talking about names like DietCokeChic, Neuropsych, Albert Green, Chaos Eternus... All names you won't find on any literary list, probably because they don't write originals... But their stories are brilliant...

[CO] Yeah I tried that... somehow I can't keep concentrated on one thing... We're nearing an end in the interview with what people tell me is the most difficult question in the entire questionaire, If you had to pick, what quote do you think describes your character best?

[Mathijs] "If at first you don't succeed, try a bigger hammer. If you still don't succeed, go sit whimpering in a corner and blame it on your parents" That was easy! Evans is actually quite cowardous and lazy. It's just that he understands what's expected of him, and that he does...

[CO] well that answers my next question about Why that quote as well so this is the end, is there anything you think the readers of this interview Should absolutely know?

[Mathijs] Eh... Ronald Evans is actually loosely based on Veterenarian/TV-presenter/Car restorer Mark Evans. I tried to work in some of that guy's humour, but he's a class of his own...

[CO] Well if that's it, I would like to thank you for your time and I'll see you around Ronin in the near future I guess, once we spring loose of that nasty Q spell

[Mathijs] Oh... Kitty and I... eh... I mean Evans will have to fly around the world first! I'm still trying to figure out a believable way to avoid those Delta quadrant aliens...

[CO] Good Luck with that

[Mathijs] Well, My pleasure giving the interview, and thanks for that short motivational speech on the end... ^.^
